Stamping On That Extra Penny

Say so long to the 44-cent stamp. Yeah, that’s right. The US Postal Service is now making all first-class stamps cost a whopping $.45 as of today.

I don’t know about you, but I was getting pretty tired of having to shell out $.44 every time I wanted to buy a stamp. I mean, it offended my incipient sense of order from the oncoming CDO, which is like OCD but with the letters in the right order like they should be. I like things to be a nice round number. And if not that, then at least something that ends in a multiple of five.

So, thanks, dudes of the USPS, for indulging me in that.

Well, in the first-class stamp anyway.

The price for mailing a post card is going up three cents, to $.32 (not a round number. Boo. Hiss.). Letters to Mexico and Canada now are 5 cents more expensive, costing $.85 (ending in a multiple of five. Yay!). Letters to any country other than those two get a seven-cent bump up to $1.05 a letter.

It’s too late now, but here’s hoping you went out yesterday and bought a whole bunch of forever stamps. Because, thanks to those, if you bought them yesterday for $.44, they’ll work just fine now that the price has gone up a penny. Which means you won’t have to use any 1¢ stamps.
